B In The Mix: The Remixes - Album Review

 Official U.S. Album Cover

Some basic stuff: Released on November 22nd  2005, little over a year after her last compilation album. Though this album is her least successful release to date, selling 105,000 copies in the U.S. and 1 million copies worldwide, it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums.

6. And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL Remix) – The only single from this remix album, and even then, it was just a promotional single, seeing a limited release and not acknowledged by her “Singles Collection”. The song was originally meant to be included on the bonus track of her “Britney & Kevin: Chaotic” DVD, but was left off. It was included along with 4 other remixes from this album in a promotional release "Key Cuts from the Remixes", which you can see here. To this date, the song’s original mix has not been released, only the ‘Junkie XL Remix’. This track is one of my favorite Britney songs, combining slow moaning vocals from Britney over the instrumentation of soaring strings and rock-guitar set to a euro-dance beat. This could have been a successful single for Britney if it had been a more widespread release; it peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay charts with no promotion or proper release, in the U.S. it was only available as a track to the album, not as a single. So, total FAIL on Jive’s part, but major win for Britney. – 10/10

9. Someday (I Will Understand)" (Hi-Bias Signature Radio Remix) – (Previously Reviewed) I normally don’t review remixes that are included with an album for a few reasons, one of them being that I am fickle about remixes, but this EP is only 5 tracks so it’s worth reviewing. In my mind, remixes should do 1 of 2 things; improve the original or take the original and make it a totally different song. This does a combination of the two, not making an entirely new song as the structure and chord progression remain intact, and not necessarily improving the original, but it does make it an upbeat song, a hard task to accomplish with a ballad. Much like the “(You Drive Me) Crazy [The Stop! Remix]”, the beat drops when she says “why don’t you stop?”, which is one of my favorite parts. – 9/10

Overall:  As I said previously, remixes should either improve the original or be an entirely different song. I’m hard-pressed to find a club-length remix that I listen to all the way, I’m a radio-edit guy through and through, and there were only 8 songs on here that were less than 5 minutes, and many had been previously included in her other albums or on separate remix EP’s. The real gem to be found here is “And Then We Kiss” - 7/10

Highlights: And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL Remix), Someday (I Will Understand)" (Hi-Bias Signature Radio Remix)

Fun Facts: Originally titled “Remixed” and sometimes listed as “Britney Spears Remixed” or “Britney Spears: Remixed”, the album’s title and cover has had many changes. “And Then We Kiss” was used for the advertisements for Britney’s “Fantasy” fragrance.
